Sam seemed to pass the ultimatum and the relationship continued with Sam trying to please Toyah by arranging trips to intellectual films such as "Being John Malkovich". Toyah explained to him that she was just as happy going clubbing.

Toyah is extremely surprised to see Spider return after his trip to India. Spider is full of his idea to start a Health Food Bar in London. He is extremely upset though to hear about Toyah's rape and they comfort each other on Emily's sofa.

Sam gets the wrong idea about Toyah and Spider's night on the sofa and confronts Spider trying to warn him away. This doesn't have the desired effect for Sam and Spider and Toyah go on to share a passionate kiss which, for Toyah is just for old time's sake. 

After much soul searching Toyah turns down Spider's offer to move to London and decides to stay with Sam.

Les copes without Janice by turning to drink and self-pity. Toyah finds it hard to cope and things become worse when she is also landed with Sam who moves into No. 5 when his pipes burst.

Toyah finally loses patience and, after an argument, asks Sam to move out days before Christmas.

With the prospect of Janice moving to Sheffield with Dennis, Les holds Janice hostage at Sam's flooded flat before disappearing on Christmas Day. 

The search for Les brings Toyah and Sam closer and they make up with Sam giving Toyah a world record 7 Christmas presents. 

Les finally reappeared drunk but the problems didn't end there. When Leanne failed to materialize as promised on New Year's Eve, he attempted to commit suicide using the exhaust of his cab. He was rescued by Dennis but on the way to hospital Dennis was mortally wounded in a road accident.

Sam becomes concerned that Toyah is deliberately avoiding him and takes matters into his own hands by suggesting a Valentine holiday. Toyah is less than impressed and finally decides to tell Sam that its over. She explains to Sam that he is just not exciting or impulsive enough for her.

Sam decides to become more impulsive by proposing to Toyah at Shelley and Peter's flat-warming party. Toyah is mortified that Sam could propose after being dumped. She runs out of the party chased by Sam.

Sam finally gets the message and decides to tell Toyah a few home-truths about her treatment of him. Sam later apologises as does Toyah and they are now friendly toward each other as free agents.

Janice returns to Weatherfield and her job at the factory. Toyah and Janice decide to live together and move into Duggie's old flat in Victoria Street.

Whilst at the caravan park Toyah falls for Goran, a Croatian photography student, who is working there on a temporary visa. After a whirlwind romance, Goran also falls for Toyah and proposes to her after only 3 days.

Toyah is initially suspicious of his residency motive but puts this aside and decides to marry him.

After a heart to heart with Maria, Toyah changes her mind and tells Goran, although she loves him, she can't marry him. Toyah returns to Weatherfield still single with only memories of Goran.

Sam, Toyah's previous boyfriend, has his arm broken during Roy's Jubilee Civil War re-enactment. When Kevin, his boss at the garage, refuses him sick pay he decides to move to Ibiza to work in a bar. Sam seeks out Toyah to say a sad goodbye.

Toyah and Maria become increasing close friends and Toyah decides to move into Maria's flat above Audrey's salon.
