Much to Toyah's annoyance, her former brother-in-law, Nick Tilsley, arrived for his Mum's wedding from Canada. Even worse, her best mate Maria fell for his charms and decided to start a new life in Canada with him.

Not only was Toyah losing her best friend to one of her worst enemies but Audrey decided that Fiz would be an ideal replacement flat mate.

Whilst Nick left for Canada, Maria prepared to follow him, until news that he had a live-in lover in Canada reached Audrey and Toyah.

Maria decided to dump Nick and the, now three flat mates, agreed to forget men and have a girl's night out. However their evening was interrupted by Nick who had made a flying visit to win Maria back.

Maria fell for Nick charms yet again and departed for Canada leaving Toyah alone in the flat with Fiz.

Toyah was initially cold toward her imposed flat mate but, when it became clear that Maria wasn't coming back, she started to thaw and together they organised a flat painting party.

Les helped out Toyah by giving her his old armchair for the flat. Toyah was horrified by the stained, fag-burnt monstrosity but came up with the idea of using it for her college art project, "Les's Chair".

Toyah invited Paul, her art tutor, to the painting party to see the chair. He was so impressed by Toyah's eloquent explanations of its hidden meanings that he entered it into the University Art exhibition.

Toyah won first prize of £500 for her work at the exhibition but her joy was short-lived as Les was offended by being portrayed as a working class slob.

Toyah and Fiz became increasing good friends. When Toyah found out about Fiz and Kirk's secret relationship she engineered the perfect 18th birthday for Fiz by getting Kirk to buy her a present and card.

The publicity generated by Toyah's  win led to Les getting into trouble with the council for illegally subletting his house to Kirk. With the threat of losing his home, Toyah assisted Kirk and Les to try and convince the Council that they were gay lovers.

Toyah started having regrets about not having gone to college further from Weatherfield.

Toyah introduces the new man in her life, John her college lecturer. Everyone is surprised not least Les when he discovers that Toyah is dating her teacher. Toyah ends up throwing Les out of her flat on Christmas Day when he voices his objections.

Toyah is besotted with her new soulmate John and they go to Bordeaux for a short break. Returning Toyah is even more smitten and fails to notice John attention's toward flatmate Maria on New Year's Eve.

Toyah started using Emily's parlour to study in peace. It was during one of these occasions that John decided to call upon Maria in the flat. Before long Maria and John ended up in the bedroom without any clothes.

Toyah returning to the flat for a book was intercepted by Ken but returned later to ask Maria to accompany Janice and her to the pictures only to find the flat apparently empty. Little did she know what lay behind the bedroom door.

Fiz, however, saw far more when she returned, John doing up his trousers and Maria in her undies.

Fiz agonised over whether to tell Toyah but could not bring herself to shatter her illusions and decided to keep quiet.

Fiz, finding a pregnancy test kit down the sofa, caused Maria to confess she might be pregnant. When it is discovered she is pregnant and the only possible father could be John tensions between Fiz and Maria soar.

Toyah can't fail to notice something is going on and Maria is forced to reveal that she is having an abortion but lies about the true identity of the father.

Toyah is really supportive toward Maria and even accompanies her to the abortion clinic.

Meanwhile Spider has returned to the Street to see the recovering Emily and attend Maxine's funeral.

John, concerned that Toyah might learn the truth about his fling, asks her to move in with him. After first being unsure about making such a big step Toyah eventually decides to accept his offer.

Fiz can't bear to see her best friend leaving the flat for love-rat John and she tells Toyah the truth. Toyah is devastated and confronts Maria in the Rovers. Maria, in an effort to placate Toyah, makes up some story about John forcing himself on her. Toyah misinterprets this and assumes John has raped Maria.

All Toyah's feeling over her own rape come to the fore and she gatecrashes John's lecture and, accusing him of rape, attacks him with a lecture prop statue called Tilly. Toyah finally sees John as the cold, cruel and selfish person he really is.

Although Toyah eventually realises that she had misread Maria's story she recognises she hasn't fully recovered from her own rape experience and decides she needs to make a fresh start away from Weatherfield. She chooses to accept an offer from her friend Spider to move to London.

Toyah leaves the Street in Spider's Juice Bar van saying a sad goodbye to her family and friends Janice, Les, Fiz, Roy and Hayley.
